God's Sovereignty

I read an article recently from a well know evangelist and in it he stated that the earthquake in Haiti was a result of God's punishment. My question is two-fold.

First, do you think God targets countries and individuals for punishment?
Second, do you think it is our responsibility to indicate when that is occuring?

  1. I don't think it's for us to know. True, God has brought and will bring judgment on individuals and nations, and He chastens those whom He loves; but who are we to know whether it is really the case in any particular circumstance?

It's interesting to me that in Luke 13:1-5, Jesus pointed out that those who had recently suffered persecution and tragedy were no more guilty than anyone else. Do we really think our ways are any less sinful?

I believe our responsibility in the matter is to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with our God (Micah 6:8). His message to the world is not one of condemnation; it is one of hope, abundant life, and freedom.
